Ample amounts of wood forming a grillage was chosen to highlight the difference in materiality between the adaptive reuse and the existing brick in the factory.

Ample amounts of wood forming a grillage was chosen to highlight the difference in materiality between the adaptive reuse and the existing brick in the factory.  This enclosed atrium is the focal point for community gathering, surrounded by classrooms on all four stories.  The wooden railing and balcony support system interweaves with the ceiling trusses to showcase a complete internal structure, providing support throughout.  A large gently-sloped walking ramp begins here and connects the original factory with the new addition, allowing the material expression of wood to extend outwards, out to the exterior of the residences.
